Somebody to Lean On

Learning the piano is often a solitary and lonely affair. Group Piano at Mountain Boogie brings some camaraderie and fun into the process!

Each class begins and ends with group musical games designed to build skills in playing, reading sheet music, and understanding musical concepts. In between, every student receives individualized attention while practicing on their own full-sized 88-key keyboard with headphones. This setup allows everyone to work at their own pace and do their own 'thang, while I rotate between students, guiding them on what to practice during class and at home.

Goals of Group Piano:

  • To create opportunities for student collaborations.

  • To encourage the development of self-directed independent practice.

  • To provide a friendly and supportive environment and foster socialization skills.

  • To provide a cost-effective lesson option, that has elements of group lessons and one-on-one attention.

Suggested Methods for the individualized instruction portion are:

The Music Tree: A Time to Begin, book 1 or book 2-A

Piano Adventures: Primer, book 1 or book 2-A

Piano Marvel: Levels 1, 2 and 3.

Class Structure

  • Opening (5–10 minutes): Fun group activities focused on rhythm, note reading, and ear training. Many of these will include take-home materials for extra practice.

  • Practice Block (40–50 minutes): Students will work individually with their chosen method series (see below). I’ll rotate between students, giving personalized instruction and setting clear next steps for practice during class and at home.

  • Headphones: Closed-back over-ear headphones will be provided (wireless headphones typically have too much latency). Students are welcome to bring their own wired headphones if they prefer.

  • Instruments: Students will rotate between five full-size, weighted keyboards (Kawai VPC-1, Roland RD 700NXYamaha P-45, Casio PX-110  and Cassio PX-100)  to experience different key actions.

  • All five Keyboards are also hooked up to their own laptops and audio interfaces for easy access to the Piano Marvel app.

  • Closing (5–10 minutes): Students will share something they’ve learned, participate in group jam sessions, or enjoy other fun music activities.
