My name is Charles Lumpkins and I have over 20 years of experience teaching piano privately to students of all ages and skill levels. Approaching each student as an individual, I try to work with his or her musical interests and current level of ability. I have taught classical, jazz, and various other styles.
I also have performance experience, both as a soloist (classical music recitals and pop/jazz/rock/folk music in small venues), and a member of a band (swing jazz ensemble, funk and soul band, and an acoustic rock duo). Other relevant teaching experiences are 4 semesters of small group piano instruction in a middle school (CLC Charter School in State College PA), and 2 semesters of small group piano instruction at an elementary school (State College Area Friends School).
Piano lessons are taught on a, Kawai VPC-1, a keyboard with a grand piano action, using professional piano sound libraries from Pianoteq, and East West Sounds. Also Students have access to a Roland RD7000 and an acustic Steinway Upright (under repairs).
My piano instruction is augmented with the use of various other instruments including a Roland TD-11 electronic drum kit, Roland Octapad, acoustic, electric and bass guitars, and various world instruments.
Students interested in songwriting, composing and music technology can take advantage of my audio production equipment including Reaper, Sonar X3, and Garage Band Digital Audio Workstations, Sibelius and Musescore notation software, and hundreds of professional virtual instruments from East West Sounds, ROLI. All of these are running through audio interfaces from Rolland and Zoom on a custom made ADK desktop audio PC and/or an M1 MacBook Air.
Lesson Schedules, Payment and Cancelation
-Lessons times are decided at the start of each semester (Fall, Summer and Spring). If a student needs to shift their lesson time mid semester, every effort will be made to accommodate, but cannot be garmented. If a new lesson time cannot be found and the student cannot meet for lessons, will still be expected to pay for the reserved lesson time for the remainder of the month lessons needed to cease.
-Payment for lessons is conducted through Quickbooks invoicing. Invoices are sent out at the beginning of the month and can be paid online via direct deposit (credit card option with additional fee [2.9% +$0.25] available upon request). Cash and Checks also accepted.
-Please give 24-hours notice to cancel a lesson. Cancelations announced with less than 24-hours notice are still subject to charge. See exception bellow.*
1.) Please wash hands or use hand sanitizer before playing instruments at the studio.
3.) If anyone in the student's household is sick, or feeling unwell, please mask (not just for suspected COVID exposure). As a solo independent business owner who is immunocompromised it is deeply appreciated.
4.) If the student themself is sick or feeling unwell. Please contact me and we will discuss how to proceed. Most likely I will ask to consider an online lesson or simply cancel.
*As a person who has gotten sick a lot over the course my life and now as a father of little ones with developing immune systems, I hate to penalize anyone on account of illness and will happily credit lesson payments towards the following month. :-)
